TL;DR / Quick Summary
Revamped April 1, 2026. HSR Edition for foreign visitors: 3-day unlimited HSR + 1 of 4 MRTs + 1 of 15 shuttles. TR Edition for everyone.
TL;DR: Since April 1, 2026, Taiwan PASS has two versions. HSR Edition NT$2,800 (foreign visitors only): 3-day unlimited HSR + 1 of 4 MRTs + 1 of 15 Taiwan Tourist Shuttles. TR Edition NT$2,500 (everyone): 3-day unlimited TRA + same combo. Activate in the Taiwan PASS app.
1. What is Taiwan PASS?
A Tourism Administration (MOTC) transport bundle for inbound travelers (formerly Taiwan Fun Card) covering intercity + city + scenic shuttles. Rule: activate within 1 year via the 85-serial in your voucher; once any item is first used, the rest must be used within 7 days (including day one).
2. Compare the two editions
| HSR Edition | TR Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult price | NT$2,800 | NT$2,500 |
| Child | Ages 6–11 child ticket (see official site) | NT$1,700 |
| Eligibility | Short-stay foreign visitors only (ROC passport / ARC holders excluded) | Domestic + international |
| Intercity | 3-day unlimited HSR (standard class, no business) | 3-day unlimited TRA |
| MRT (pick 1 of 4) | Taipei / Taoyuan Airport / Taichung / Kaohsiung MRT+LRT | Same |
| Shuttle (pick 1 of 15) | Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, 1 route | Same |
Under 6 free without a seat; with seat, buy a child ticket.
3. Where to buy and redeem
- Online: KKday, Klook, twpass.tw, Alishan ticketing site. You get an e-voucher serial.
- Airport counters: Taoyuan T1/T2 arrival halls — Lion Travel (Mon–Fri 08:00–17:00), HiPower (daily 04:30–23:00); Taipei Main Station front store.
- HSR: present app code + passport + entry proof at any HSR counter for physical tickets; reserved seats must be booked (business class excluded).
- MRT: Taichung/Kaohsiung mostly QR in-app; Taipei Metro and Airport MRT need physical card exchange.
4. HSR booking rules that matter
- Redeem and travel within 89 days of code issuance; book trains up to 29 days ahead until 1 hour before departure.
- Booking opens the day after you claim the serial (claim Jan 5 → book Jan 6 onward).
- Reserved seats must be booked at least 1 day before travel; otherwise ride non-reserved. Enter via manual gates with ID on hand.
5. Worth-it math
Taipei–Zuoying round trip ≈ NT$2,980 — already more than the NT$2,800 HSR Edition, which adds MRT + shuttle on top. One north–south round trip pays for the pass. Staying only in Taipei with <4 MRT rides a day? Just get a 24/48-hour Taipei Metro pass instead.
6. Watch out
- Periodic "buy 2 get 1 free"-style promos exist in limited quantities — check current deals before buying.
- Once the first item is used, travel dates lock and the 7-day clock cannot be changed; reserved items like Alishan Forest Railway count from actual travel date.
- HSR Edition is strictly foreign-only; redemption refused on a Taiwan passport is non-refundable.
7. FAQ
Can Taiwanese buy the HSR Edition?
No — short-stay foreign visitors only. ROC passport/ARC holders should buy the TR Edition.
Taiwan PASS vs standalone THSR Pass?
Standalone 3-day THSR Pass (NT$2,200) is HSR only. PASS HSR Edition (NT$2,800) adds MRT + shuttle — pick PASS for multi-city + sights, standalone for HSR-only trips.
How do child fares work?
Ages 6–11 child ticket; under 6 free without seat. TR Edition child NT$1,700; HSR Edition child fare per official site.
Must I reserve seats?
Yes for reserved cars (by the day before). Non-reserved needs no booking. Reserve peak times early.
Is the app mandatory?
Yes — activation, HSR serials, and QR entry all run in the Taiwan PASS app.
Refunds for unused items?
No cancellation or partial refunds for personal reasons. Plan first, buy later.
