Taiwan Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa to Visit Taiwan?

Published on February 21, 2026

Planning your trip to Taiwan? Before you book your flights and hotels, the very first thing you need to check is your visa status.

Fortunately, Taiwan has one of the most welcoming visa policies in Asia, offering visa-exempt entry (visa-free access) to citizens of over 60 countries.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of Taiwan's visa rules, how to check if you qualify for visa-expert entry, and the steps to take if you need to apply for an e-Visa or traditional tourist visa.

Disclaimer: Visa policies can change. Always verify the latest information on the official website of the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA).

1. Visa-Exempt Entry (Visa-Free Access)

If you hold a passport from one of the eligible countries, you can enter Taiwan for tourism, business, visiting relatives, or attending international conferences without applying for a visa beforehand.

General Requirements for Visa-Exempt Entry:

  1. A valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining from the date of entry. (Some countries, like the US and Japan, only require validity for the intended period of stay).
  2. A confirmed return or onward ticket (and a visa for your next destination, if required).
  3. No criminal record in Taiwan.

Length of Stay Allowed

The duration you are allowed to stay depends entirely on your nationality.

90 Days Visa-Free: Citizens of most Western and European nations generally receive 90 days. This includes:

  • North America: USA, Canada
  • Europe: UK, Ireland, all Schengen Area countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.)
  • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
  • Asia: Japan, South Korea, Israel

30 Days Visa-Free:

  • Malaysia, Singapore, Nauru.

14 Days Visa-Free:

  • Philippines, Thailand, Brunei (Note: The visa-free policies for these specific Southeast Asian countries are often run on trial periods and extended annually. Always double-check before travel).

2. The Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) for Southeast Asian Countries

Citizens of Certain Southeast Asian countries who do not qualify for automatic visa-exempt entry might be eligible to apply online for a Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC), which grants multiple entries over 90 days, with a maximum stay of 14 days per entry.

Eligible Countries:

  • India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos.

The Catch: To qualify for the TAC, you must hold a valid (or expired within the last 10 years) resident card or visa from one of these countries: USA, Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, or any Schengen country.

Application process: Apply online via the National Immigration Agency website. It's free, immediate, and you just need to print the certificate.

3. The e-Visa

If you don't qualify for visa-free entry or the TAC, Taiwan offers a convenient e-Visa system for specific nationalities and purposes.

Who is eligible for an e-Visa?

  • Citizens of specific countries (mostly in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of South America).
  • Foreign nationals invited by the Taiwanese government to attend international conferences, sports events, or trade fairs (regardless of nationality).
  • Tour groups from specific countries participating in the "Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from Southeast Asian Countries".

Application process: Apply through the BOCA website, pay the fee online via credit card, and receive the e-Visa via email.

4. Traditional Visitor Visas

If you are planning to stay in Taiwan for more than your visa-free period allows (e.g., you are American but want to stay for 120 days to study Mandarin), or your nationality requires a visa and isn't eligible for the e-Visa, you must apply for a traditional Visitor Visa.

Where to apply: You must apply at an ROC (Taiwan) Embassy, Consulate, or Representative Office abroad (often called a "Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office" or TECRO, as Taiwan does not have formal diplomatic relations with many countries).

Standard requirements:

  • Completed application form (printed and signed).
  • Two passport-sized photos.
  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months).
  • Proof of travel plans (flight itinerary, hotel bookings).
  • Proof of financial support (bank statements).
  • Visa fee.

Arrival & Immigration Tips

  • EGates: Taiwan has expanded its automated e-Gate system. If you belong to a reciprocal country (like the US Global Entry system, UK, Germany, Italy, Australia), you can register for e-Gate usage upon arrival to skip the immigration lines on future visits.
  • Arrival Card: Whether you need a visa or not, every foreign visitor must fill out an Arrival Card. Save time by filling out the online Arrival Card on the National Immigration Agency website a few days before your flight.
