TL;DR / Quick Summary

How to book Taiwan Railway (TRA) tickets the right way: the 28-day booking window and holiday calendars, official website and 台鐵e訂通 app, convenience-store pickup (NT$8 fee), the 2-day payment deadline, fare logic, refund fee tiers, EMU3000 free-seat cars and the TR-PASS unlimited travel pass.

TL;DR

Taiwan Railways (TRA) is the island's local train system — cheaper than the HSR, and it reaches everywhere the HSR doesn't (Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, and the Pingxi/Neiwan/Jiji branch lines). Three things every traveler should know before booking: reservation opens 28 days before departure (long weekends open on their own announced midnight dates), a reservation must be paid and picked up within 2 days, and tickets can be refunded before departure (the fee depends on how early you cancel). Book on the official TRA website or the official 台鐵e訂通 app; convenience stores can sell/pick up tickets for an NT$8 service fee per ticket.

1. Know Your Trains

TrainCharacterReservation
Tzuchiang / 自強 (incl. EMU3000 "New Tzuchiang", Puyuma, Taroko)Fastest, reserved seatsYes — book ahead for East coast
Jukuang / 莒光Slower expressYes (some unreserved cars)
Fuhsing / 復興Local expressMostly no
Section trains 區間/區間快Commuter, all stationsNo reservation — just tap a stored-value card

The Yilan, Hualien and Taitung runs are the ones that sell out: North-link trains and the Puyuma/EMU3000 East Coast services can be fully booked within minutes of the window opening on weekends.

2. When Can I Book?

  • Regular days: 28 days ahead. From a Monday you can book up to the Monday four weeks later; on Fridays the system extends by two extra days (so you can book through Friday/Saturday/Sunday four weeks out).
  • Same-day tickets: on the travel day itself you can book trains departing 30+ minutes from now (convenience-store pickup requires payment within 10 minutes of printing the slip).
  • Holidays: special calendars. Each long weekend opens on its own announced midnight date, roughly 28 days out. For 2026 the official calendar includes, for example: Mid-Autumn (book from Aug 25, 00:00, for Sep 22–29 travel), Double Ten Day (from Sep 8, 00:00, for Oct 6–12), and New Year 2027 (from Dec 1, 00:00, for Dec 29–Jan 4). East-coast trains (Yilan/North-link/Hualien–Taitung/South-link lines) may open on a separate, earlier midnight than West-side trains — always check the official 訂票期程表 (Booking Schedule) page on railway.gov.tw.
  • Limit: 9 tickets per ID/passport number per person per day.

3. Booking Channels (All Official)

  1. TRA website (railway.gov.tw → 線上訂票 → 個人訂票): single or multi-leg bookings, seat availability check, online card payment.
  2. 台鐵e訂通 app (iOS App Store / Google Play): booking, payment, changing, refunds, plus live tardiness info.
  3. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart): both ticket sales via the in-store kiosk and pickup of online bookings. NT$8 service fee per ticket. Not for seat changes — those go via a station counter.
  4. Stations: staffed ticket counters (pickup on presentation of booking code + ID) and multi-function ticket machines.

4. Payment & Pickup Deadlines

  • After booking online, pay and collect the ticket within 2 days; if the travel date is within 2 days of booking, you must complete pickup by the day before travel.
  • Online-paid bookings can be picked up at any station or participating convenience store.
  • Miss the deadline and the system automatically cancels your reservation.

5. Fares: How They're Calculated

Fares = train-class rate × distance, with a decreasing rate for longer journeys (per official rate table, NTD per km):

BandSection (區間)Jukuang (莒光)Tzuchiang (自強)
Under 50 km2.182.613.39
50.1–100 km1.922.302.98
100.1–200 km1.812.172.81
200.1–300 km1.531.832.37
Over 300 km1.421.702.20

So a long East-rift Tzuchiang run is disproportionately cheap per km. Don't do the math by hand — use the official fare/mileage calculator (票價試算) on railway.gov.tw, or check the fare field when the website shows booking results. Children, seniors and disability-companion tickets exist (also bookable online).

6. Free-Seat (Zi-You-Zuo) Cars on EMU3000

From July 1, 2026 (effective dates), selected west-corridor EMU3000 Tzuchiang trains run a dedicated free-seat car: car 9 on direct trains; cars 9–11 on local-stop trains. Adult fare is 5% off the regular Tzuchiang fare (95折); purchasable up to 7 days ahead via the official website/app; not valid for bento pre-orders. You may board only the car class you paid for — riding reserved-car sections with a free-seat ticket means a full-fare penalty plus a 50% surcharge.

7. Changing & Refunding (Fee Table, from Jun 23, 2025)

Changes (換票): the first change of train/date/class/ticket-type/seat is free; changes to origin/destination are not allowed. Requests accepted until 30 minutes before departure. A second change is processed as a refund+rebook.

Refund fees for reserved-seat tickets (per ticket; unreserved and non-reservation tickets refund free):

Days before travelFee
Travel day (D)10% of fare (min NT$20)
D-1 to D-25% (min NT$20)
D-3 to D-24Flat NT$20
D-25 or earlierFlat NT$10

Credits via a credit card must be refunded to the original card, so keep it while traveling. If a typhoon sea warning disrupts travel, unused tickets are fully refundable without the fee (at stations, the official website, or the app) — within a year of interruption.

8. TR-PASS: The Unlimited Tourist Pass

For round-island or multi-city travelers, TR-PASS gives unlimited seat reservations on TRA during consecutive days:

  • 3-day: NT$2,400 adult / NT$1,200 discounted — 5-day: NT$3,200 / 1,600 (prices per the June 23, 2025 revision; the 4-person group versions were discontinued in 2023).
  • Buy in person at a computerized-ticketing station window with your passport (or ID) — it's real-name (since Oct 15, 2024), name printed on the ticket, checked against ID during inspections.
  • Valid almost year-round except the announced Chinese New Year suspension; you set your start day when buying (within 30 days of purchase), then ride consecutive days.
  • Reserve seats at any station window with the pass + your ID. Not valid for tourist trains, cruise-style runs, real-name trains, or business-class cabins; Puyuma/Taroko/EMU3000 train seats are reserved through the window like any other pass seat.
  • Change of mind before activation: cancellation costs NT$31; after activation it's non-refundable except force majeure.

Worth it? Add up your planned Tzuchiang/Jukuang trips with the official fare calculator and compare against the pass price — it pays off for three or more long-distance rides in a row.

9. FAQ

Do I need a reservation for TRA?

For Section/commuter trains, no — just tap a stored-value card or buy a ticket. For Tzuchiang and most Jukuang, reservations are strongly recommended (mandatory for reserved trains on the east coast).

I booked but can't board without a physical ticket?

Online-paid bookings can be used as mobile tickets in the app. Otherwise, pay and pick up at a station counter/machine or convenience store (NT$8 fee) — remember the 2-day deadline.

What if my train is sold out?

Check the seat-availability page early, try different trains around your preferred time, or split the journey (e.g., Taipei→Yilan by Section train, then reserved onwards). Refund rules are buyer-friendly if you act early: D-3 to D-24 refunds only cost NT$20.

Can I change a ticket picked up at a store?

Convenience stores don't handle seat changes; go to a station counter (first change free, until 30 minutes before departure). Refunds at stores only apply before departure and fees follow the standard table.

Are TRA passes parallel to the HSR pass covered here?

No — TR-PASS is TRA-only. Combinations with metro/HSR or Taiwan PASS are covered in our Taiwan Pass guide and city & metro passes guide.

How do foreign travelers handle the purchase of real-name products?

Bring your passport. Real-name tickets (including TR-PASS) may also be bought by one person for a group, showing each traveler's ID/passport; inspectors match ticket-to-ID, so ride with the same document you provided.
