Must-see (west to east)

Swallow Grotto: potholes + cliff swallows; prettiest marble patterns; ~30-min trail.
Tunnel of Nine Turns: narrowest cliffs + water-curtain cave; ~700m of peak gorge feel.
Eternal Spring Shrine: cliff lookout + waterfall; memorial to highway builders; the photo subject.
Shakadang Trail: marble + turquoise stream; gentle, kid-friendly; full round trip ~3 hrs if able.

Access & time needed

Tourist shuttle / charter from TRA Hualien / Xincheng into the gorge. Stay half to full day with Qixingtan.
Winding Central Cross-Island Highway: motion-sickness meds help. Tour groups crowd mornings—go early.

Warnings (important)

Some trails close after quakes/typhoons—always check official notices and obey on-site control.
Helmets in rockfall zones (rentals at some sections); stay on trails; skip the gorge on rainy days.
No fuel or shops inside; bring water and food.
