Shilin Night Market

Taipei’s biggest and most famous night market. Giant Hao-Da chicken steak, pepper buns and oyster omelets, plus a seated basement food court with Japanese menus—easiest for first-timers.

The most famous night market in Taiwan, always featured on Japanese TV. Centered on Yangming Theater and Cixian Temple, spanning Wenlin, Dadong, Danan and Jihe roads. The basement food court has seats, AC, restrooms and Japanese menus—rain-proof and beginner-friendly.

Hao-Da Chicken Steak (~NT$90): bigger than your face, dusted with five-spice.
Wei-Rong Charcoal Chicken: fried, glazed, charcoal-grilled—locals’ favorite.
Fuzhou Pepper Bun (Shilin branch): kiln-baked, juicy pork inside.

Access & time needed

MRT Tamsui-Xinyi Line, Jiantan Station Exit 1, ~3 min walk (not Shilin Station).
Stay 2–3 hrs. Very crowded on weekends; wear your bag in front.
Pair with the National Palace Museum + Shilin Residence in the daytime.

Tips

Basement staff call out in Japanese; English + gestures work fine.
Game stalls, shopping and fortune-telling in one place; prices slightly higher than local markets.
Many cameras and crowds; relatively safe for solo women, still beware pickpockets.
