TL;DR / Quick Summary

Volcanic craters and healing waters. The ultimate day trip guide to Taipei’s backyard national park and hot spring haven.

Just a 30-minute drive from downtown Taipei, you can reach a completely different world: active volcanoes, sulfurous smoke, and some of the best hot springs in the world.

This is a journey about "Fire" and "Water."

Yangmingshan National Park: Taipei's Backyard

This national park is centered around the Datun Volcano Group, offering different stunning views in every season.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring (Feb-Mar): The famous Yangmingshan Flower Festival. Cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom across the mountains, attracting large crowds of flower-watchers.
  • Summer: A haven from the heat. After afternoon thunderstorms, rainbows can often be seen arching over the valleys.
  • Autumn: Datun Autumn Colors. Silvergrass sways in the wind across the mountains, creating a magnificent golden sea of flowers.
  • Winter: During strong cold fronts, snow occasionally falls on the peaks of Mt. Qixing and Mt. Datun.

Geological Wonders

  • Xiaoyou-keng: A landscape of intense post-volcanic activity. You can witness fumaroles and sulfur crystals up close, feeling the "breath" of the Earth.

Xinbeitou Hot Spring Area: The Land of Healing

Descending from Yangmingshan to Beitou, you arrive at the birthplace of Taiwan's hot spring culture.

White Sulfur and Green Sulfur

Beitou hot springs are famous for White Sulfur (milk soup) and the precious Green Sulfur (a healing spring containing radium).

  • Thermal Valley: Permeated with sulfurous smoke year-round with extremely high water temperatures, it is one of the sources of Beitou hot springs, resembling a fairyland on earth.
  • Beitou Hot Spring Museum: This beautiful British-style brick building was originally the "Beitou Hot Spring Public Bathhouse" built in 1913.
    • Visiting Tip: Free admission, but closed on Mondays. You must remove your shoes and change into designated slippers to enter. There is a capacity limit, so queues may be expected on holidays. We recommend going on weekday mornings for the best experience.
  • Beitou Library: One of the world's most beautiful libraries. This all-wood green building is nestled in the park, perfect for reading a book after a soak.

Recommended One-Day Itinerary

  1. Morning: Take a bus up to Yangmingshan, stroll through the Qingtiangang grasslands, or visit Xiaoyou-keng to see the volcanic fumaroles.
  2. Afternoon: Descend to Xinbeitou. Visit Thermal Valley and the Hot Spring Museum.
  3. Evening: Choose a premium hot spring hotel (such as Kagaya or Villa 32) to enjoy a top-tier soaking experience and Kaiseki cuisine.

In Taipei, nature and the city are just this close.

If you find the hot springs in Beitou too comfortable and seek a more primitive, wilder hot spring adventure, then Lisong Hot Spring (Wild Stream Only) deep in the Southern Cross-Island Highway mountains is waiting to challenge your limits.
