Lisong Hot Spring: God's Forgotten Emerald
If you are tired of artificial hot springs in hotels and crave a real adventure, Lisong Hot Spring will make your legs weak but will absolutely shake your soul.
Hailed as "the most beautiful wild stream hot spring in Taiwan," the spring water pours down the rock faces, painting a natural mural of emerald green, crystalline white, and amber.
Difficulty Warning
- This is NOT a typical tourist spot.
- Difficulty: Advanced. Requires physical strength and climbing skills.
- Terrain: From the trailhead, you descend about 400 meters. The slope is extremely steep, requiring rope-assisted climbing for almost the entire path.
- Duration: About 1 hour one-way (downhill); 1.5 - 2 hours return (uphill).
Best Time to Visit: Dry Season
- November to April is the only window for visiting.
- Summer (May-October): During the rainy season, the river levels rise, submerging the hot spring pools. Crossing the river becomes extremely dangerous, and visiting is strictly forbidden.
Gear Checklist
- Gloves: You will be using ropes the entire time; without gloves, your hands will get blistered.
- River Tracing Shoes: Mandatory! Do not wear flip-flops or running shoes. The rocks are extremely slippery.
- Change of Clothes: You will definitely get soaked.
- Dry Bag: Protect your phone and camera.
Implementation Guide
1. Entrance and Descent
The entrance is located on a small side road off the Southern Cross-Island Highway (Provincial Highway 20). It starts with a steep descent immediately. If your legs feel weak on the way down, turn back immediately, because the return climb is three times harder.
2. River Crossing
After reaching the bed of the Xinwulu River, you need to wade across. The water is freezing, and the rocks are covered in moss. Some sections can be waist-deep and require holding onto fixed ropes to combat the current.
3. Arriving at the Spring
After crossing the river, the steam emerging from the rock crevices will tell you that you've reached the destination.
- Emerald Rock Wall: This is the hallmark of Lisong. Green algae, nourished by the high-temperature water and minerals, form jewel-like crystals on the rock face.
- Water Quality: Mildly alkaline carbonate spring, with water temperatures around 45-65°C. Sitting by the stream, leaning against the hot rock wall with your feet in the cool river water, is nature's most luxurious treat.
Important Reminders (LNT)
- Leave No Trace: Please carry out all your trash. This is a water protection area.
- Physical Assessment: Do not attempt if it is raining. The wet rock walls become extremely dangerous.
The beauty of Lisong lies in its "difficulty to reach." Only after the test of sweat and cold water will the warmth of the spring be so deeply unforgettable.
