Jiufen Without the Crowd: A Night & Early Morning Guide
Jiufen is undeniably beautiful. Jiufen is also, frequently, a claustrophobic nightmare.
During the day (especially between 11 AM and 5 PM), hundreds of tour buses drop off thousands of tourists who proceed to clog the remarkably narrow "Old Street" (Jishan Street). You are pushed, shoved, and assaulted by the mixed aromas of stinky tofu, grilled squid, and cheap perfume. It becomes a struggle merely to walk, let alone appreciate the stunning coastal views or historic architecture.
But at 7 PM, something magical happens. The tour buses leave.
Here is how you actually enjoy the mountain town of Jiufen.
The Strategy: Reverse the Schedule
To see the real Jiufen, you must strictly avoid peak hours.
Strategy 1: Arrive Late (The Evening Stroll)
- 5:00 PM: Arrive in Jiufen. The crowds are starting to thin. Head straight to a tea house (like the famous A-Mei Tea House or Skyline Tea House) to secure a balcony seat.
- 6:00 PM: Watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean while brewing high-mountain Oolong tea.
- 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM: The majority of shops on the Old Street will close. However, the iconic red lanterns lining the staircases (Shuqi Road) remain illuminated. The streets empty out.
What it feels like: This is when Jiufen truly feels like the movie Spirited Away. Without the overwhelming noise, you can hear the wind coming off the ocean. You can see the lights of the squid fishing boats scattered far below in the dark harbor. The local stray cats emerge to reclaim the stairs. It is spooky, atmospheric, and incredibly cinematic.
Strategy 2: Stay Overnight (Highly Recommended)
If you want the ultimate experience, book a local B&B (民宿 - Minsu).
- The Reward: Waking up at 6:30 AM. When you walk out onto the streets, you will be the only person there. The morning mist rolls through the mountains, and you can photograph the lantern-lit staircases completely devoid of people. It is peaceful and hauntingly beautiful.
Alternate Activities (Before the Tea Houses)
If you are staying overnight or arrive in the early afternoon wanting to avoid the crowded shops, head into the mountains.
- Keelung Mountain (基隆山): The trailhead is just a 5-minute walk from the Jiufen Old Street entrance. It’s a steep, stair-heavy climb that takes about 45-60 minutes to the summit, rewarding you with an unbelievable 360-degree view of Jiufen, the Gold Ecological Park, and the Northeast Coast.
- Teapot Mountain (茶壺山): Located nearby in Jinguashi. A slightly more challenging hike with rewarding, dramatic rock formations.
Recommended Tea Houses
- A-Mei Tea House (阿妹茶樓): The most famous one, featuring the iconic wooden architecture and glowing lanterns. It is beautiful, but you sit inside the view, so you can't take a picture of the exterior while drinking tea.
- Skyline Tea House (海悅樓): Located directly across the stairs from A-Mei.
- Pro Tip: Go to Skyline. Sit on their open-air balcony. You get to drink excellent tea while enjoying the absolute best, unobstructed view of A-Mei Tea House's striking facade.
Getting Back (If Not Staying Overnight)
If you only execute Strategy 1 and need to return to Taipei, catch the 965 Bus back to Ximen, Beimen, or Banqiao stations. It runs relatively late (usually until around 9:00 PM, but always double-check the current schedule).
Taxis wait near the bus stop, but be aware that they often refuse to use meters after dark and will quote a fixed price (usually around 1200 NTD to Taipei).
