Hualien Food Map: The Queuing Philosophy of Locals
The food density in Hualien City is extremely high, with most concentrated in the "Golden Triangle" formed by Zhonghua Road, Zhongshan Road, and Gongzheng Street. The food here possesses a bold, East Coast character: generous portions, strong flavors, and absolutely no fear of you eating too much.
1. Gongzheng Baozi (公正包子)
This used to be a major landmark in Hualien City.
- Latest Intel: Gongzheng Baozi has moved! It is now located on Ren'ai Street (near Miao Kou Black Tea).
- Must-Order: Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumplings). The Xiaolongbao here are not the thin-skinned variety like Din Tai Fung, but rather have a thick, chewy, and slightly sweet old-dough skin, wrapped around a juicy pork filling. At just 5-10 NTD per dumpling, the CP value (cost-performance ratio) is extremely high.
- How to Eat: You absolutely must dip them in the shop's special garlic soy sauce.
2. The Bomb Pancake (炸蛋蔥油餅)
There are two trucks on this street: the "Yellow Truck" and the "Blue Truck." It's an eternal war.
- Yellow Truck: The top choice for tourists, the most famous, and has the longest queue. The texture is crispier.
- Blue Truck: Loved by locals, the dough is chewier and softer, and the sauce leans towards the sweet side.
- What is a Bomb (Fried Egg)?: An egg is cracked directly into the deep fryer and cooked until half-done, then covered with the dough. The moment you bite into it, the runny yolk bursts (bombs) in your mouth.
- Strategy: Opens at 1:00 PM. We recommend queueing up by 12:40 PM, or calling ahead to order (if you can understand the boss's rapid-fire speech).
3. Yixiang Wonton vs. Daiji Wonton (液香扁食 vs. 戴記扁食)
Hualien is a battlefield for Wontons (Bianshi).
- Yixiang Wonton: The favorite of former President Chiang Ching-kuo, and the most famous. The broth is on the lighter side, and the meat filling is solid.
- Daiji Wonton: The locals' secret list, the broth has a stronger fried shallot flavor, and the wonton wrappers are as thin as wings.
- Conclusion: Choose Daiji if you like stronger flavors, choose Yixiang if you want to eat at the famous spot.
4. Miao Kou Black Tea (廟口紅茶)
- Feature: Steel-pipe black tea. The drinks flow from the second floor down to a faucet on the first floor via steel pipes, which provides a cooling effect.
- Must-Eat: Taiwanese Macarons (Small Western Pastries). The outer shell is crispy, and the filling is an old-fashioned cream. Paired with a cup of traditional black tea, this is the most authentic Hualien afternoon tea.
Hualien's food doesn't require exquisite plating; what it requires is for you to open your mouth wide, boldly take a bite of the exploding scallion pancake, and feel the passion of the East Coast.
