TL;DR / Quick Summary

A 45-minute scooter loop. One of the world's only saltwater hot springs, snorkeling in Shilang, and the haunting White Terror Memorial Park.

Green Island: A Paradise with a Heavy Past

Green Island (Ludao), located 33km off the coast of Taitung, is a place of stark contrasts. The volcanic island is breathtakingly beautiful, surrounded by crystal clear waters teeming with life. Yet, for decades, its name was synonymous with fear—it was the "Alcatraz of Taiwan," where political prisoners were exiled during the White Terror era.

Today, it is a haven for divers and scooter road-trippers. The 18km loop road is perfect for a day of exploration.

The Scooter Loop (Counter-Clockwise)

Start from Nanliao Harbor and HEAD NORTH. Riding counter-clockwise keeps the ocean immediately to your right.

1. White Terror Memorial Park (Green Island Human Rights Culture Park)

This is not just a tourist spot; it is a sacred historical site.

  • The Prison: Walk through the "New Life Correction Center" and "Oasis Villa" (Green Island Prison). The preserved cells and wax figures offer a chilling glimpse into the lives of the intellectuals and dissidents held here.
  • Elephant Trunk Rock: Known as the "Gate of Hell" by prisoners, this archway marked the point of no return.

2. Green Island Lighthouse

A beacon of hope on the northwest corner. The pure white tower stands against the lush green grass and blue sea. Below it lies the Wuyouku (Oil Stain Cave), a sheltered tidal pool perfect for a calm swim.

3. Little Great Wall & Interesting Rocks

  • Little Great Wall: A stone trail running along the ridge that looks like a miniature version of the famous wall.
  • Rock Formations: From the pavilion, look down to see the Pekingese Dog and Sleeping Beauty rocks. They are uncanny in their resemblance.

4. Zhaori Hot Spring (Saltwater)

The jewel in Green Island's crown.

  • World Rare: One of only three accessible saltwater hot springs in the world (the others are in Kyushu, Japan, and Sicily, Italy).
  • The Experience: The water is fed by heated seawater rising from the volcanic bedrock. It's salty and sulfurous.
  • Best Time: 4:30 AM. Buy some eggs and shrimp to cook in the boiling vent area, then soak in the ocean-side pools while watching the sunrise over the Pacific.

5. Dabaisha (Great White Sand)

Located on the southwest corner, this is a prime snorkeling spot with a long wooden walkway extending out over the coral reef.

Practical Tips

  • Rent a Scooter: It is the only practical way to get around. Quality varies, so check the brakes (brakes are important here) before you leave the shop.
  • Gas Station: There is only one gas station on the island, near the harbor. It closes early (around 5 PM). Fill up immediately upon arrival.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is intense. Wear a hat and long sleeves. If swimming, please avoid chemical sunscreen to protect the coral reefs.
  • Getting There: Ferry from Taitung Fugang Harbor (50 mins, can be bumpy) or a small plane from Taitung Airport (15 mins, hard to book).

Green Island is a place to reflect on freedom while enjoying the wild beauty of nature.
