Anping Fort & Old Street

Taiwan’s oldest fort, the Dutch Zeelandia ruins. Climb the lookout over the strait, pair with the tree house and old-street shrimp rolls—a classic Tainan half day.

Why Taiwan’s history starts here

Dutch Zeelandia Castle of the 1600s, renamed Anping after Koxinga expelled the Dutch. Oldest fort and first trading port. Remaining walls + lookout symbolize 400 years of Tainan.

Highlights

  1. Fort lookout: over Anping harbor and the strait; plaques cover Dutch/Ming/Qing eras.
  2. Zeelandia Museum: fort history + Age of Sail artifacts; strong AC, a summer refuge.
  3. Tree House + Tait & Co.: warehouse swallowed by banyans—pure Ghibli, walkable.
  4. Old Street: shrimp rolls, oyster rolls, tofu pudding, dried fruit on "Taiwan’s first street".

Access & time needed

  • ~30 min by bus from Tainan Station, or shuttle from HSR Tainan. Stay half a day (fort + tree house + street).
  • Pair with Chihkan Tower, Confucius Temple and Shennong Street for a full day.

Tips

  • Fares and hours per official site (heritage sites often close Mondays—check ahead; full fare ~NT$50).
  • Brutal midday heat: fort early/late, tree house at noon.

Photo spots

Fort walls + lookout, banyan tree house, sword-lion murals on the old street.
