The Philosophy
Most tourists do the "Western Route" (Taipei -> Taichung -> Kaohsiung). It is convenient. It is also boring. We are doing the East Coast Drift. The Pacific Ocean on your left, cliffs on your right.
Day 1-2: Yilan & Hualien
Skip the tunnel traffic. Leave at 5 AM.
- Stop: Kavalan Distillery. Even if you don't drink at 9 AM, it is a pilgrimage.
- Stay: Taroko Gorge. Yes, it's touristy, but stay inside the park at Silks Place. It changes everything.
Day 3-4: Dropping Off the Grid (Taitung)
Taitung is where time stops.
- Drive: Highway 11. It's the Route 66 of Taiwan.
- Eat: Indigenous BBQ. Wild boar and millet wine.
Day 5: The South (Kenting)
Not the main street. Go to Jialeshui. Surf vibes, vintage trucks, and no loud techno bars.
Day 6: The Return Leg (Tainan)
Stop for beef soup (see our Tainan Guide). The contrast between the wild east and the historic west is jarring but beautiful.
Day 7: Taipei Re-entry
Ease back into civilization with a whiskey at Fujin Tree (see review). You earned it.
