Longshan Temple
Taipei’s oldest and most powerful temple, the "department store of blessings". Matchmaking red threads, moon-block fortunes, dragon-gate in and tiger-gate out. No incense needed since 2020.
Why the department store of blessings
Founded 1738, Taipei’s oldest and highest-ranking temple, a national historic site alongside the Palace Museum and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial. Main deity Guanyin (legend: the statue survived WWII bombing intact). 100+ gods behind: Yue Lao (love), Zhusheng (children), Wenchang (exams), Guan Di (wealth), Mazu (safety), Hua Tuo (health).
4 worship steps (empty-handed OK)
- In the Dragon Gate (right), out the Tiger Gate (left). Step over thresholds, left foot first, one-way counterclockwise.
- Three Treasures Hall → main Guanyin hall → rear halls for the god matching your wish.
- Before each god, silently state name, birthdate, address and wish, bow three times. Include the other person’s name/address for relationship wishes.
- No incense since 2020: palms together is enough.
3 fortune steps (moon blocks)
- Toss two crescent blocks: one flat + one round = yes; same sides = no; max 3 tries.
- On yes, shake a numbered stick from the tube, then confirm the number with the blocks.
- Take the matching fortune slip (graded from excellent down). Chinese interpretation at the desk; Japanese staff sometimes on weekends. Take it home.
Yue Lao red thread
- Greet all gods first, then state name, birth data, address and ideal partner in detail.
- Three straight approvals earn one red thread.
- Circle it clockwise 3 times over the main censer and carry it with you.
Access & time needed
- ~3 min walk from MRT Longshan Temple Exit 1. Stay 40–90 min.
- Pair with Bopiliao, Herbal Lane tea, Huaxi Night Market (Michelin braised pork rice), Mengxia Night Market.

Editor's Take
Local Tips
