The Ultimate Taiwan Itinerary: 1, 2, and 3 Week Routes
The beauty of Taiwan is its size. The island is roughly the size of Maryland or Belgium. Because it's compact and strapped with world-class infrastructure (like the High-Speed Rail), you can cover an incredible amount of ground in a relatively short time.
However, deciding where to go is the hard part. Do you prioritize the bustling food scene of the west coast cities, or the dramatic, rugged nature of the east coast?
Here are the master blueprints for exploring the whole island of Taiwan, optimized for 1-week, 2-week, and 3-week trips.
The 1-Week Taiwan Itinerary: The "Golden Triangle"
With only 7 days, trying to loop the entire island is a mistake. You will spend half your trip looking out a train window. Instead, focus on the "Golden Triangle": Taipei, Taroko Gorge, and Sun Moon Lake.
- Day 1: Taipei (Arrival & Icons) - Arrive at Taoyuan Airport. Visit Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, go up Taipei 101, and eat your body weight in street food at Raohe Night Market.
- Day 2: Taipei (Day Trip to Jiufen) - Take the train to Ruifang. Release a sky lantern in Shifen, then spend the late afternoon drinking tea and watching the sunset in the historic mountain town of Jiufen.
- Day 3: Hualien & Taroko Gorge - Take the early express train down the stunning East Coast to Hualien. Hire a driver to spend the afternoon exploring the massive marble canyons and shrines of Taroko National Park.
- Day 4: Taichung - Take the train across the island to the central west-coast city of Taichung. Visit the whimsical Rainbow Village and eat ice cream at the Harry Potter-esque Miyahara Eye Clinic.
- Day 5: Sun Moon Lake - Take a bus from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake. Rent a bicycle and cycle along what CNN hailed as one of the most beautiful cycling routes in the world.
- Day 6: Taipei (Old City) - Take the High-Speed Rail (HSR) from Taichung back to Taipei. Spend the afternoon in Ximending and the historic Dihua Street.
- Day 7: Departure - Grab a final Taiwanese breakfast (soy milk and youtiao) before taking the Airport MRT back to Taoyuan for your flight home.
The 2-Week Taiwan Itinerary: The Classic Island Loop
Two weeks is the absolute "sweet spot" for a first trip to Taiwan. It gives you enough time to do a complete loop of the island without feeling completely exhausted.
- Days 1-3: Taipei & Surrounds - Explore Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum, and hike Elephant Mountain. Do the Jiufen/Shifen day trip on Day 3.
- Days 4-5: Hualien & Taroko Gorge - Deep dive into Taroko Gorge, hiking the Shakadang Trail and Swallow Grotto. Eat at the massive Dongdamen Night Market in Hualien city.
- Day 6: The East Coast Rift Valley (To Taitung) - Take the scenic train down to Taitung. Rent an e-bike in Chishang and ride through the endless rice paddies of "Mr. Brown Avenue."
- Days 7-8: Kenting (The Tropical South) - Head to the southern tip of the island. Kenting National Park offers beautiful white sand beaches, surfing, and a distinctly laid-back, tropical vibe.
- Days 9-10: Kaohsiung & Tainan - Take the bus up to Kaohsiung (visit the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas). The next day, ride to Tainan, Taiwan's ancient capital. Tainan is the undisputed food capital of the island—prepare to eat non-stop and explore historic forts.
- Day 11: Taichung & Sun Moon Lake - Head central to Taichung, transfer to a bus to see the serene beauty of Sun Moon Lake.
- Day 12: Alishan (The High Mountains) - Take a bus deep into the central mountains to the Alishan National Scenic Area. Sleep early!
- Day 13: Alishan Sunrise & Return to Taipei - Wake up at 4:30 AM to take the forest railway to see the famous "sea of clouds" sunrise over the peaks. Head back down to Chiayi HSR station, and bullet train back to Taipei.
- Day 14: Taipei Departure - Final souvenir shopping in Taipei before flying out.
The 3-Week Taiwan Itinerary: The Deep Explorer
With three weeks, you can leave the tourist trail and experience the wilder, outer edges of Taiwan that most visitors miss.
- Follow the 2-Week Loop Above, but inject these 3 major detours:
Detour 1: The Offshore Islands (Add 3 Days)
Instead of just passing through Taitung, take a ferry from Taitung harbor to either Green Island (Ludao) or Orchid Island (Lanyu).
- Green Island: Famous for the Zhaori Saltwater Hot Springs (one of only three in the world) and incredible scuba diving.
- Orchid Island: The home of the indigenous Tao people, featuring unique underground houses, flying fish culture, and intensely rugged volcanic scenery.
Detour 2: The High Mountain Crossing (Hehuanshan) (Add 2 Days)
Instead of taking the train around the coast to get from Taroko to Taichung, take the Central Cross-Island Highway. This mountain road goes over the center of the island, reaching altitudes over 3,000 meters. Stop at Qingjing Farm (the "Switzerland of Taiwan") and hike around the peaks of Hehuanshan for unbelievable views, before descending into Taichung.
Detour 3: Slower Pace in Tainan & Chiayi (Add 2 Days)
Spend an extra day in Tainan simply getting lost in its narrow alleys, visiting independent coffee roasters, and eating more street food. Spend a day in Chiayi exploring its booming hipster culture and eating its famous Turkey Rice before heading up to Alishan.
Tips for Planning the Loop
- Transport Flow: The East Coast (Taipei > Hualien > Taitung) must be done by regular TRA train, as there is no high-speed rail. The West Coast (Kaohsiung > Tainan > Taichung > Taipei) should be done using the High-Speed Rail (THSR) to save massive amounts of time.
- Direction: You can do the loop clockwise or counter-clockwise; it doesn't matter. Counter-clockwise (Taipei -> Tainan -> Kaohsiung -> Hualien) is slightly more popular, but going Clockwise (Taipei -> Hualien -> Kaohsiung) runs against the main crowds during peak holiday seasons.
- Luggage: If you are doing the 2 or 3-week loop, pack light. Dragging a massive 25kg suitcase onto buses towards Alishan or Sun Moon Lake is miserable.
