Hiking *up* a river. Jumping off waterfalls. Why Hualien is the best place in Asia to do it.

River Tracing: The Ultimate Summer Adventure

When summer hits in Taiwan, it gets hot. Oppressively hot. The best way to escape? Jump into a river. But not just swimming—hiking up the river.

What is River Tracing (Suo Xi)?

It's a combination of hiking, bouldering, and swimming. You wear a wetsuit, a helmet, and felt-soled boots (to grip the slippery rocks). You follow the river upstream, climbing over waterfalls and jumping into deep pools.

Why Hualien?

Hualien is the river tracing capital of Asia. The mountains rise sharply from the sea, creating steep, clear rivers with stunning marble canyons. The Shakadang River and Sanzhan Golden Grotto are the most famous spots. The water is turquoise blue and clear as glass.

Is it Safe?

  • Go with a Guide: Do not do this alone. Flash floods are real. Guides know the weather patterns and the safe jumping spots.
  • Gear: The felt boots are mandatory. Regular sneakers are essentially ice skates on wet river rocks.

The Experience

It's physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. There is nothing like the feeling of standing under a waterfall in a marble canyon that looks like a Chinese painting. Most tours end with a "tribal lunch" cooked by the river—hot pot or indigenous BBQ. It's the perfect way to warm up after hours in the cool mountain water.
