Published on November 27, 2025

TL;DR / Quick Summary

Winding alleys, ancient temples, and traditional crafts. Step back in time in Taiwan’s most historic town.

"First Tainan, Second Lugang, Third Monga." This Taiwanese proverb tells the story of Lugang's past glory. Although the port is no longer busy due to silting, this ancient town has managed to preserve the most complete appearance of the Qing Dynasty. Lugang is not a fenced-off museum, but a living, breathing historical stage full of daily life.

This is a stroll through space and time.

1. Shuttle Through Time: Lugang Old Street

Once known as the "Street Without a Sky," Lugang Old Street is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty commercial district in Taiwan.

  • Red Brick Charm: Stroll along Yaolin Street and Putou Street, with red brick pavements underfoot and traditional southern Fujian-style shophouses on both sides. Every brick and tile here seems to be telling a century-old story.
  • Nine Turns Lane (Jiuqu Lane): Lugang's famous winding alleys, originally designed to block strong sea winds and prevent theft. Walking through them, there is a different scenery turning every corner, full of the joy of exploration.

2. Centers of Faith: Tianhou Temple and Longshan Temple

  • Lugang Tianhou Temple (Mazu Temple): The only temple in Taiwan dedicated to the founding Mazu statue from the Meizhou ancestral temple. Both its historical status and architectural art are considered national treasures. The incense smoke is thick, acting as the spiritual pillar for the locals.
  • Lugang Longshan Temple: Hailed as the "Forbidden City of Taiwan," it boasts the most exquisite caisson ceilings and wood carvings in all of Taiwan. There is no hustle and bustle here, only simplicity and solemnity, making it perfect for quietly appreciating architectural beauty.

4. Practical Information

  • Transportation: You can easily reach there by transferring to the "Taiwan Tourist Shuttle" Lugang Route from the Taichung HSR Station or Changhua Train Station.
  • Souvenirs: Besides Ox-Tongue Biscuits, Phoenix Eye Cakes and Flour Tea (Mian Cha) are also highly representative traditional pastries in Lugang, perfectly suitable as souvenirs.

5. Conclusion

The beauty of Lugang lies in its tasteful "aging." Smoke from incense curls around ancient temples, and the aroma of pastries wafts from old street shops. Here, history is not just text in a book, but a life that can be touched and tasted.
