TL;DR / Quick Summary

Welcome to Taiwan's tropical south. Kenting offers white sand beaches, coral reefs, and vibrant night markets. Discover the best time to visit, top attractions, and how to get around in this ultimate guide.

Kenting (墾丁) is located at the absolute southern tip of Taiwan in Pingtung County. Known for its tropical climate, pristine beaches, coral reefs, and laid-back vibe, it is the premier beach resort destination in Taiwan. Whether you want to surf, snorkel, or just relax by the ocean with a cocktail, Kenting has something for everyone.

This guide covers everything you need to know for a perfect trip to Kenting National Park.

1. When is the Best Time to Visit?

Because Kenting is tropical, it is warm year-round, but the seasons drastically affect the experience.

  • Best Time: Spring (March to May) & Autumn (October to November). The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for swimming, but without the intense, sweltering heat of mid-summer. The crowds are also thinner.
  • Peak Season: Summer (June to September). This is when the water is warmest and the town is most vibrant. However, it is also typhoon season, extremely hot, and very crowded (book accommodation well in advance!).
  • Off-Season: Winter (December to February). While still mild compared to Taipei (often around 20-24°C), the famous "Downhill Wind" (Luo Shan Feng) hits the peninsula, making the ocean too rough for swimming on some days.

2. Top Beaches to Visit

Kenting has several distinct beach areas, each with its own vibe:

  1. South Bay (Nanwan / 南灣): The most popular and lively beach. It has the longest stretch of soft, white sand and is the hub for water sports like jet skiing and banana boats. It can get very crowded.
  2. White Sand Bay (Baishawan / 白沙灣): A gorgeous crescent of white sand famously featured in the movie Life of Pi. It has fewer water sports than Nanwan, making it slightly more relaxed.
  3. Little Bay (Xiaowan / 小灣): Located right at the end of Kenting Main Street. It's smaller but very convenient. There is a great beach bar here where you can enjoy a drink under an umbrella.

3. Beyond the Beach: Top Attractions

Kenting is fundamentally a National Park, offering much more than just sand.

Eluanbi Lighthouse (鵝鑾鼻燈塔)

Located at the southernmost point of Taiwan, this striking white lighthouse is surrounded by a beautiful park with coral rock formations and ocean views. A must-visit photo spot.

Longpan Park (龍磐公園)

Leave the sandy beaches behind for dramatic, windswept limestone cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Because there is minimal light pollution, it is one of the best places in Taiwan for stargazing.

National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (國立海洋生物博物館)

Often ranked as one of the best aquariums in Asia. The highlight is the massive underwater tunnel and the beluga whale exhibit. It's an excellent option for families or if you need an air-conditioned break from the sun.

4. Kenting Night Market (墾丁大街)

When the sun goes down, Kenting Main Street transforms into a massive, bustling night market. It stretches for nearly two kilometers.

Unlike traditional city night markets, Kenting's version has a distinct beach-party vibe. You'll find mobile cocktail bars, seafood stalls selling fresh oysters and giant squid, stalls selling flip-flops and beachwear, and loud music.

Must-Eat: Grilled wild boar sausage (山豬肉香腸) and fresh Thai-style shrimp.

5. Transportation: How to Get There and Get Around

Getting to Kenting

There is no direct HSR or train to Kenting.

  1. High-Speed Rail (HSR): Take the HSR to Zuoying Station (in Kaohsiung).
  2. Kenting Express Bus (墾丁快線 - Route 9189): From HSR Zuoying Station Exit 2, take the Kenting Express bus. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to reach Kenting. You can pay with an EasyCard or buy a ticket at the counter.

Getting Around

Kenting is spread out.

  • Scooter Rental (Recommended): Renting a scooter is by far the best way to explore. If you don't have a valid international motorcycle license, you can rent an electric scooter (e-bike) which does not require a license, though they are slower and require battery swaps.
  • Kenting Shuttle Bus (墾丁街車): If you don't rent a scooter, the local shuttle bus connects major attractions, but the frequency can be low, requiring careful planning.

Pack your swimsuit, plenty of sunscreen, and get ready to experience the tropical paradise of Taiwan!
