TL;DR / Quick Summary

Experience the easiest 3,000-meter peaks in Taiwan. Drive straight up to Wuling Pass for breathtaking sunrises, star-gazing, and accessible alpine hiking at Hehuanshan.

Hehuanshan (合歡山), or Joy Mountain, offers what is arguably the highest reward-to-effort ratio of any mountain range in Taiwan.

While climbing most 3,000-meter peaks in Taiwan requires days of trekking and sheer physical exertion (like Yushan or Xueshan), you can quite literally drive to the peaks of Hehuanshan. The Central Cross-Island Highway cuts directly through the mountain range, bringing cars and buses right to Wuling Pass (武嶺), the highest navigable road in Taiwan at 3,275 meters.

This accessibility makes Hehuanshan the premier destination for viewing sunrises above the Sea of Clouds, high-altitude star-gazing, and even catching a glimpse of snow during the winter.

1. Top Hikes (The "Baiyue" within Reach)

Hehuanshan is famous for allowing casual hikers to bag several "Baiyue" (the list of 100 Peaks in Taiwan over 3,000m) in a single weekend.

Shimen Mountain (石門山)

  • Difficulty: Very Easy.
  • Time: 30-40 minutes round trip.
  • The Experience: Often dubbed the "easiest Baiyue," the trailhead is right on the highway. It's essentially a staircase walk up a slope. It offers stunning 360-degree views and is a popular spot to watch the sunrise.

Hehuanshan Main Peak (合歡主峰)

  • Difficulty: Easy.
  • Time: 1.5 to 2 hours round trip.
  • The Experience: The trail was formerly a military road, meaning it is wide, paved in sections, and ascends very gently. It’s perfect for families and offers panoramic views of the entire Central Mountain Range.

Hehuanshan East Peak (合歡東峰)

  • Difficulty: Moderate.
  • Time: 2 to 2.5 hours round trip.
  • The Experience: It is a continuous, steep ascent entirely on wooden stairs right from behind Songsyue Lodge. It is physically taxing due to the altitude, but the peak is covered in beautiful Yushan Dwarf Bamboo.

2. When to Visit: The Seasons of Hehuanshan

  • May to June (Alpine Azaleas): This is peak season. The mountain slopes burst into spectacular hues of pink and white as the native alpine azaleas bloom. Expect severe traffic jams on weekends.
  • July to August (Summer Escape): While the plains swelter in 35°C (95°F) heat, Hehuanshan remains a crisp, cool 15°C (59°F). It's the ultimate summer retreat.
  • January to February (Snow Season): Hehuanshan is one of the few places in Taiwan that reliably receives snow. When the snow falls, the road is strictly monitored, and cars are required to install snow chains to pass.

3. The Sea of Clouds and Stargazing

Due to the lack of light pollution and the high altitude (often placing you literally above the weather systems), Hehuanshan is Taiwan’s first certified International Dark Sky Park (暗空公園).

  • Stargazing: The parking lot at Wuling Pass or the Dark Sky Park viewing platform at Yuanfeng are the best spots.
  • Sunrise: If you don't feel like hiking in the dark, you can watch the sunrise right from the Wuling Pass parking lot, or book a "Sunrise Tour" from Cingjing Farm that will drive you up in a minibus.

4. How to Get There & Where to Stay

Transportation

  • Driving: The drive up Provincial Highway 14甲 from Puli is incredibly scenic but extremely winding. Drive slowly and use engine braking on the way down.
  • Public Bus: Nantou Bus operates route 6658A from Cingjing Farm up to Hehuanshan. You must book this bus in advance as seats are limited.

Accommodation

  • Songsyue Lodge (松雪樓): At 3,150m, this is the highest hotel in Taiwan and the only place to stay right on the mountain. Getting a room here (bookable exactly 1 month in advance) is as hard as winning the lottery.
  • Cingjing Farm (清境農場): Most visitors choose to stay at the much lower, Swiss-styled Cingjing Farm (around 1,700m) and take a 45-minute drive up to Hehuanshan for the sunrise.

Whether you're looking to effortlessly stand on the roof of the island or simply watch the stars in absolute clarity, Hehuanshan brings the dramatic beauty of Taiwan’s high mountains within reach for everyone.
